It is common knowledge that we live in a highly competitive society where only the strongest can succeed. But what makes us really strong, competitive? Of course, the level of our education, the knowledge we acquire while studying at the university!
This is the tool with which a person can assert himself in any field, show his readiness to engage in this or that business. And here at the moment the question arises: how to become a highly educated, comprehensively developed, professionally trained person in conditions where the inappropriate attitude of some higher education seekers to their duties becomes an obstacle. Therefore, the problem of maintaining academic integrity is extremely relevant nowadays.
"Academic integrity is the way to change this world. But first change the university, and then change the world" - Jungsup Kim, participant of the Conference of the International Center for Academic Integrity. Indeed, in order for global change to occur, to change any system, it is always worthwhile to start with oneself first and to cultivate a decent citizen and a just person in oneself and in one's environment. Academic integrity begins with the virtuous conduct of each of us.
Article 42 of the Law of Ukraine "On Education" defines academic integrity as a set of ethical principles and rules defined by law, which should be guided by the participants of the educational process during learning, teaching and carrying out scientific (creative) activities in order to ensure trust in the results of training and/or scientific ( creative) achievements. But unfortunately, there are many violations of academic integrity, such as: academic plagiarism (publishing someone's research results as one's own or a text without indicating authorship); self-plagiarism (publishing one's own previously published scientific results as new); fabrication (fabrication of data or facts); falsification (a known change or modification of already available data related to the educational process or scientific research); writing off; deception; bribery; biased assessment; helping students during the evaluation of their educational results or creating obstacles during the evaluation; influencing the employee to make an unbiased assessment (Part 4 of Article 42 of the Law of Ukraine "On Education").
The phenomenon of academic dishonesty (dishonesty, dishonesty) is multifaceted and can take on different manifestations. It is based on the deliberate violation of moral and legal norms generally accepted in the academic environment, usually in order to obtain certain advantages. In any case, the spread of such manifestations deals a devastating blow to the quality of education and scientific research, and therefore to the prospects of ensuring the sustainable development of society. As noted by American researchers A. Vaitaka and P. Gitimu: "...the level of academic dishonesty in institutions reflects the spread of the erosion of ethical behavior in society due to the fact that there is a tendency for self-centeredness to prevail over concern for others."
The Project of Promotion of Academic Integrity in Ukraine - SAIUP, which has been operating since 2016, is proof that such a problem still exists. That is, for many years, students have been participating in various discussions, "round tables", in order to familiarize themselves with the rules of academic culture, to understand their rights and responsibilities. Codes of honor were introduced in most institutions as one of the areas of implementation of the Project.
At the same time, students signed that they are ready to personally observe the rules of academic integrity and make its existence a real fact. The project also uses foreign experience, which allows students to delve more deeply into the problems of this topic. A set of measures to counter manifestations of academic dishonesty should be implemented at all levels of management in the field of education and science.Or in the negative case, according to the apt expression of Academician M.Z. Zgurovskyi, the country faces the inevitable formation of the industry of "diplomatized pseudo-education" with a set of unfavorable development scenarios. Therefore, in recent decades, the world academic community has developed a number of approaches aimed at countering manifestations of academic dishonesty, which have acquired fully institutionalized forms.
Therefore, academic integrity is indeed an integral part of higher education, and therefore it is not enough just to believe in fundamental values. They must be defended, even when faced with pressure from others or differing views. And this requires determination, dedication and courage.
