The headline constitutes an integral component of a text, performing essential functions in the organization, perception, and dissemination of information. Specifically, it attracts attention, facilitates the reader's orientation within the content, structures material, and highlights key aspects. Although often perceived as a relatively straightforward element, the headline acts as a news teaser. In a concise form, it conveys the topic and main idea of the text while reflecting the author’s perspectives, editorial policies, and integrating ideological, political orientations, cultural traditions, and technical features specific to a given publication.

The functionality of headlines in media discourse has been explored by researchers such as V. Halych, T. McArthur, D. Reah, M. Swan, M. Tymoshyk, M. Cheletska, and T. Yuan. Summarizing their insights, it can be stated that the headline: is a unique type of text distinguished by specific functions that determine its format, content, and composition; acts as a stimulus encouraging further engagement with the text, providing a finishing touch to the author's communicative intent; serves as a reference point for the reader, promoting logical segmentation and easy comprehension of the text; forms the foundation for the coherence of a journalistic piece, encapsulating its uniqueness and ensuring harmony between its idea and structure; is characterized by minimalism and sensationalism.

Consequently, a headline in media discourse can be defined as a textual unit functioning as a summary of the article while simultaneously serving as a communicative tool that influences audience perception. It combines brevity, informativeness, and emotional impact, thereby fostering effective interaction between the author and the reader.

The Daily Mail, a British tabloid ranking second in press circulation, is known for its sensational presentation, entertainment-focused content, and often controversial style tailored to a broad audience. The outlet’s approach to readers is defined by the emotional tone of its news and political polarization. Its thematic coverage spans politics, news, celebrities, sports, health, and lifestyle, with a particular emphasis on entertainment and gossip. Headlines in British press, particularly in The Daily Mail, frequently employ stylistic techniques and expressive devices that accentuate their emotional and aesthetic dimensions.

The Daily Mail often employs epithets to heighten the sensational effect of stories and emphasize emotions. For example, «Sean O'Malley is the rainbow-haired flamboyant star groomed for the top from the very start» (The word «Flamboyant» paints a striking picture of the celebrity's character and style, drawing readers into their world of allure and sophistication).  Analysis reveals that epithets, presented as either single words or phrases, acquire new meanings through context and positioning within the text. They represent one of the most frequently employed devices in The Daily Mail headlines.

Metaphors in The Daily Mail headlines create vivid imagery, enabling the concise communication of complex ideas. They add emotional depth and enhance textual impact, aiding in the coverage of intricate social, political, or economic issues. For instance, «Small firms will suffer if they don't get help too: The «perfect storm» of economic forces facing businesses this autumn is off the scale, writes MARTIN MCTAGUE». «Perfect storm» captures the intersection of economic pressures that pose a significant risk to small enterprises. Meanwhile, «Off the scale» amplifies the depiction of the extreme nature of these financial difficulties.

Allusions in journalistic headlines often reference well-known cultural, historical, or literary events and figures to establish deeper connections or evoke specific emotions. For example: «How Covid lockdowns opened Pandora's box of diseases», the phrase «Pandora’s Box» draws from Greek mythology, where Pandora releases calamities upon the world, symbolizing the virus’s far-reaching and uncontrollable repercussions.

Metonymy is frequently used to enhance the emotional resonance of The Daily Mail headlines, enabling concepts and objects to gain greater significance or anthropomorphic qualities.  For examples, «Downing Street refuses to say whether Rachel Reeves broke the ministerial code». In this context, «Downing Street» serves as a metonym for the Prime Minister and their advisors, rather than merely referencing the physical location.

Phonetic devices, such as alliteration, are also widely employed for attention-grabbing. For instance, «Squabbling Tories tear themselves apart over tax as race to succeed Boris becomes bitter» uses repeated «t» to highlight the division within the political party over fiscal policies.

Headlines in The Daily Mail often combine formal and informal styles balancing formality and colloquialism. For example: «Cringe moment Anthony Albanese HOLDS HANDS with Xi Jinping at centre of G20 leaders». The blend of relaxed, conversational expressions like "cringe moment" with references to high-level political actors and events, such as the G20 summit and Xi Jinping, creates an engaging mix of relatability and the gravity of global affairs.

The Daily Mail extensively utilizes a variety of stylistic devices, including alliteration, wordplay, metaphors, and idiomatic expressions, to enhance the effectiveness of its headlines. Alliteration creates rhythm and draws attention, while wordplay injects humor, making complex topics more accessible. By blending humor with gravity, The Daily Mail effectively covers a wide range of subjects, from lighthearted stories to significant social issues, without losing audience interest. The integration of cultural references into headlines meets readers’ expectations, establishing a deeper connection with the content.
