Modern Ukraine is a country with young market economy, which still is greatly influenced by its communistic past. Business in Ukraine differs much from business in other countries, especially the American and European ones. Unfortunately, most of the comments on Ukrainian culture are negative. One of the main differences between Ukrainian and other businessmen is that the latter take on a big amount of individual responsibility while Ukrainians prefer to rely on groups and carry a group risk. Ukrainians do not take on personal responsibility easily. After gaining a leadership position, many Ukrainians become rather authoritarian and change their attitude towards their coworkers. Unfortunately, leaders tend more to concentrate decision-making powers in their own hands and demand loyalty and subservience from their employees in addition to work-related skills. In Ukraine being bit late is a norm. Arriving five minutes late to an appointment is usually seen as fine. It can even cause a conflict between foreign and Ukrainian business partners. Also, In Ukraine, meetings are often rescheduled or even cancelled, sometimes at the last minute. That’s why, it is better to always confirm meetings. In Ukraine relations between workmates are warmer and more emotional than in most western countries. Employees usually celebrate their birthdays at work. Sometimes companies spend money on birthday and New Year’s gifts for their employees. In many occasions Ukrainians rely on the power of personal contact. For instance, personal contacts in government structures are particularly valued. What is more, Ukrainians like to meet in person and prefer not to discuss serious issues over the phone or internet. A very big hardship of Ukrainian business is bribery. It flourished in Ukraine, and businesses are forced to look for personal relationships with government officers for their own security and being informed. To effectively run a business in Ukraine, one has to adapt to the existing communication style. Bribe-taking is situated very deep in mind of Ukrainians and their way of life. The numerous attempts to struggle corruption and bribery led to nothing. In Ukraine the rules and principles of government bodies are very poorly formulated and not available to the general public. Many people don’t know the basic laws of their country, their rights and obligations. This lack of official information is maddening to many Ukrainian and foreign businessmen. Even in case when rules are written down in a particular document, many details such as bureaus' choice of office hours, the availability of necessary forms, and other can easily throw everything out of kilter. In fact, very little is done to make the system work more smoothly and efficiently. It is known what changes need to be made in the system to make everyone's lives easier, but they are never made. In Ukraine government and business are always struggling one another. Various government structures have overlapping spheres of responsibility and may have conflicting instructions. It is normal for a Ukrainian company to specify sex or age of potential employee. It is very hard to find a job for a person over 45-50. Some people find it almost impossible. Furthermore, job discrimination against young, married women is common. The reason for this is that employers are afraid that such woman can soon bear a child and go on maternity leave. Sometimes women are even asked if they plan on having children soon in their job interviews. From the one hand, its rational and logical for a company to be sure, that a new worker will not leave soon, but from the other hand, such practice goes against ideas of human rights. With Ukraine's more traditional values, discrimination is often not viewed with the same disgust as it is in western countries. Women in business are also discriminated. Effective businesswomen should always realize that often women are not welcome in particular spheres of business.
